What is an otolaryngologist (oh-toh-lar-ing-gol-uh-jist)?
An otolaryngologist is a physican and surgeon who specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of medical and surgical disorders of the ear, nose, and throat in adults and children. The scope of otolaryngology also includes diagnosis and treatment of allergic disorders, thyroid disorders, and hearing loss. Otolaryngologists are ready to start practicing after completing up to 15 years of college and post-graduate training. To qualify for certification by the American Board of Otolaryngology, an applicant must first complete medical school, and at least five years of specialty training. Board Certification in Otolaryngology recognizes clinical competence in General ENT, Pediatric ENT, Head and Neck Surgery, and Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.
